What makes a good water polo coach?


To the question "What makes a person a good, successful or great sports coach?", There are probably so many different answers and opinions as the people who make them. It is similar to compiling a list of attributes that a successful leader should have. In many countries, there are established standards for performing a coaching profession that define what trainers of different qualifications levels (from beginners to top-level trainers) should know and be able to work independently. For example, UK Coaching Certificate UKCC is based, inter alia, on national professional standards for training, teaching and training. According to the UKCC (42) the coach should be able to perform the following activities:

a. Planning- Creating short-term and long-term training programs that are in the function of achieving certain goals.

b. Implementation training program.

c. Evaluation- the evaluation of the program, the achieved development and the advancement of athletes and their own work.

In order to successfully complete these tasks, the coach needs to develop knowledge and practical skills.

▶Using evaluation tests, controlling progression in training, and predicting performance

It is considered that a good coach should:

▶Develop his own philosophy of training, have his goals and a desire for success. ▶Be well aware of the sport of water polo(sports rules, rules of competition, equipment, conditions). ▶Know basic pedagogical-psychological principles of teaching and training of sports technicians and tactics. ▶Adopt a humanistic approach to children's and youth sports and has a positive approach to coaching. ▶Be a good planner and organizer (training, competition, travel ...). ▶Have a wide general knowledge. ▶Be a good motivator, a person who aspire and inspire. ▶Be a good communicator (with athletes, school, parents, the media ...). ▶Work on improving all aspects of psycho-social development of athletes - self-esteem, social skills, sportsmanship - character. ▶Work on team building - team harmony, unity, cohesiveness, team spirit. ▶Be a good leader. ▶Be a source for talent identification. ▶Have positive personality traits and is constantly working on his own personal development. ▶Be optimistic and energetic. ▶Constantly improving his skills.

We hope that this rather detailed and demanding list of quality, skills and knowledge that a good coach should possess will not discourage you. Regardless of the inevitable differences in specifying the number of attributes and / or relevance attached to them, all these "high quality lists" have very similar content. Coaches are very important piece in the personal development. Many coaches have influenced lives and careers. Coaches have a great power to influence their players. But, with a great power comes a great responsibility.
